AIn the 1890s, GN was constructing its transcontinental mainline nicknamed, 'The Hi-Line' across Montana. Though the route had a challenge to the West of Kalispell, GN had constructed a pass over the Cabinet Mountains named, 'Haskill Pass' and was the original mainline between Kalispel to Libby, MT. With grades reaching 2.2% reconsideration for a realignment was brought to the surface. In which the line into Whitefish was constructed. Haskill Pass, only to live a short life, it's rails were still fit for use. GN management looked at the now useless Kalispell line as only good use as a branchline. However with the boom of Copper industry in Anaconda and Butte, the proposal for a line was brought forward. And so, The 'Lo Line' was created in the process. The whole mainline was completed in 1896, with three subdivisions. From Kalispell through the flats of Swan Valley, Clearwater through Morris Pass (Helmville to Drummond), and down into Philipsburg over Olson Pass and into Anaconda. From there, to Butte and connecting back with the High Line in Helena. The grade was composed of a ruling 2% with sections even reaching 2.2%, it was not an easy climb. Helpers were needed to conquer the grade. The GN was reconsidering a realignment of their mainline through Deer Lodge with the NP, as for then grades were near to level. However the decision was too late, the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacifc (MILW) already set their tracks down next to the NP, and possible completion could run prices down. The GN tried to stick with the route over Georgetown and was worth it. Into the 1920's massive production from the smelter in Anaconda and multiple industries throughout the lin proved the line profitable. Most trains stayed on the eastern side of the pass on the section from Anaconda to Helena. The west side however was a different story. On many trains crews faced problems with ventilation in many tunnels, Biggest being Tunnel #1, and in the spring of 1936, Tunnel #1 was torn down and a big cut was formed as well as a siding, nicknamed 'Marmot.' After the transition to diesel, the line was maintained as a secondary mainline, and the number of trains that conquered the hill were rerouted trains, short manifest, and locals within the valley. After the BN Merger in 1971, BN seized both the NP and GN mainlines. BN choosing the better NP maintine into Butte decided to keep the GN Mainline as a backup route and the still somewhat profitable line from Butte to Anaconda. With complications with the Anaconda smelter and mine in Butte, the number of trains came down to about 2 trains a day by 1976. and after 10 years of serving under BN ownership, the mainline from Seeley Lake to Helena was mothballed due to the mine and smelter shutting down and Frisco Management. This line is completely fictional, however many of the buildings, roads, and trees are accurately placed according to what is on Google Maps. Thank you for taking time to read and enjoy my Fictional GN/BN Olson Pass.
This package includes the TRS22 version of the route. Route by bnsffan10 (Moose).
